Claudia Jones

Unsung black leaders-Claudia Jones-Claudia Jones was once a feminist, political visionary, and pioneering journalist. Claudia Jones was born in the Caribbean island of Trinidad in 1915 but moved to the United States as a child.


A distinguished feminist and communist, Jones was deported from the United States for her political activities in 1955. She won asylum in the UK, the place she launched Britain's first most important black newspaper, the West Indian Gazette. Confronted by the infamous "No blacks, no dogs, no Irish" posters, Jones grew to become a leader in the rising black equal rights movement as she sought to gain a fairer existence for black human beings in the UK.


In 1959, she helped to determined Notting Hill Carnival, hoping showcasing Caribbean culture and heritage would empower her community. Notting Hill Carnival is presently Europe's largest avenue festival and is also renowned around the world with extra than one million traffic a year.
